When a new student joins us they experience a varied mathematics programme of study that is focussed on the individual.
Each year the demands on our children increase to secure a good grade in mathematics at GCSE. It is essential to secure a place at college to study vocational course and 'A' levels and also to gain employment in a competitive market. At Selston High School our Mathematics team have consistently supported students wanting to follow their life dreams and career aspirations. When a new student joins us they experience a varied mathematics programme of study that is focussed on the individual. Students are quickly organised into ability groups in order to maximise the individual support they receive. Through regular assessments, intervention and personal support, a student at Selston High School maximises and, in many cases exceeds, expectations securing a good grade in mathematics.
In the maths GCSE students cover a variety of topics from the 5 strands of: algebra, number, space and shape, data handling and ratio and proportion. Students begin the GCSE course after Easter in year 9 to ensure there is enough time to maximise the students’ opportunity to access the full course.
All students at Selston High School are now completing a second mathematical course, 'GCSE Statistics'. The course material is integrated fully within the traditional GCSE programme of study and is examined via a written exam and a piece of controlled assessment. As a result all students will have the benefit of obtaining an additional academic qualification.
Last year over 72% of Mathematics students beat or meet their target grades and 73% of students achieved a C grade or higher.
One in five students successfully achieve a top maths grade which helps them to have greater opportunities when applying to Colleges and Universities.
